Dara Friedman

Dara Friedman lives and works in Miami. Dara Friedman has exhibited at various museums and galleries internationally. lemon sky: projects + editions published in collaboration with Dara Friedman a series of 11 photographic images which are stills from Friedman's acclaimed DVD projection entitled "Romance"(2001) made during the artist¹s Rome Prize
residency that same year. This work was originally shot in a public park close to the American Academy in Rome -- intimately revealing couples as they kiss and embrace in the slow motion of the camera. Friedman is most widely known for her process oriented film and video installations. The 11 new photographic works comprising the exhibition at lemon sky are a selection of stills taken from the Romance footage. Each image captures a passionate encounter between two lovers -- some rapturous, others playful or coy. All convey a spontaneous intimacy. In her process, Friedman avoids any
determined linear narrative -- rather, her approach is to gather and present a collection of moments, each potent within their own individual context.

In an interview published in the November December 2001 issue of "Flash Art" Magazine Friedman spoke with writer Gene Moreno about her work: "My narratives are the essences, perhaps poetic, of actions or situations. Instead of seeing the entire story, my "fragmented narratives" cut to the chase, enter at the climax, distill a situation to its essence, fast-forward to the important bit. They get you to the part you really care about, without build-up or denouement. But something else happens. You get to a turning point, a decisive moment, where you really feel something. The narrative is boiled down or paired away to its crucial point. In our lives we have personal landmarks: events that occurred, strong feelings, something someone said...the events that play over and over in our minds that mean so much to us....The narratives are a reflection of this."
